Transferring Google Files to Microsoft 365

Purpose

As part of the transition from Google Workspace to Microsoft 365, this article explains how to move your existing Google Forms, Google Sheets, Google Slides, and Google Docs into their Microsoft 365 equivalents. Following these steps will help ensure your files remain accessible and usable in the Microsoft environment.

Before You Begin

  • Sign in to your Google account and Microsoft 365 account.
  • Use a modern web browser (Edge or Chrome recommended).
  • Verify that you have permission to download or copy the Google files you plan to transfer.
  • For large or shared files, notify collaborators before making changes.

Google Docs → Microsoft Word

Google Docs can be downloaded and opened directly in Microsoft Word.

Steps

  1. Open the Google Doc you want to transfer.
  2. Select FileDownloadMicrosoft Word (.docx).
  3. Save the file to your computer.
  4. Open Microsoft Word (desktop or web).
  5. Upload or open the downloaded .docx file.
  6. Review formatting, images, and tables to ensure everything converted correctly.

Notes

  • Most text and formatting transfers cleanly.
  • Complex layouts, add-ons, or custom fonts may require minor adjustments.

Google Sheets → Microsoft Excel

Google Sheets can be converted into Excel workbooks.

Steps

  1. Open the Google Sheet.
  2. Select FileDownloadMicrosoft Excel (.xlsx).
  3. Save the file to your computer.
  4. Open Microsoft Excel.
  5. Upload or open the .xlsx file.
  6. Verify formulas, charts, and conditional formatting.

Notes

  • Standard formulas convert automatically.
  • Some Google-specific functions or scripts may not be supported in Excel and may need rework.

Google Slides → Microsoft PowerPoint

Google Slides can be converted into PowerPoint Presentations.

Steps

  1. Open the Google Slides Presentation.
  2. Select FileDownloadMicrosoft PowerPoint (.pptx).
  3. Save the file to your computer.
  4. Open Microsoft PowerPoint.
  5. Upload or open the .pptx file.
  6. Allow PowerPoint to complete any compatibility checks.
  7. After conversion, review the presentation carefully:
    * Fonts: Google-specific fonts may be replaced. Update fonts as needed.
    * Layouts: Verify slide layouts and spacing.
    * Images & Media: Confirm images, videos, and embedded objects display correctly.
    * Animations & Transitions: Some effects may change or not transfer exactly.

Common Issues and Tips

  • Advanced animations and transitions may not convert exactly.
  • Embedded Google‑specific elements (such as linked charts) may lose live connections.
  • Comments and version history from Google Slides are not retained.
  • Perform conversions before important presentations.
  • Standardize fonts using Microsoft‑supported fonts to avoid display issues.

Google Forms → Microsoft Forms

Google Forms do not have a direct one-click export to Microsoft Forms. Forms must be recreated.

Recommended Process

  1. Open the Google Form you want to transfer.
  2. Select the three vertical dots in the upper right corner.
  3. Select Print.
  4. Select Save as PDF.
  5. Select Save.
  6. Navigate to https://forms.office.com/Pages/DesignPageV2.aspx.
  7. Click Quick import.
  8. Navigate to the file you save in Step 5.
  9. Click Open.
  10. Select the file type you want the file imported as:
    * Form: Collect quick survey or form responses
    * Quiz: Enable automatic grading for easy assessment
  11. Once the conversion is done, click Start review.

Note: The import process is not a 1:1 copy. You'll need to go through the new form and make any corrections: View https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iWeWJyiOffk for added insight.

Preserving Existing Responses

  • In Google Forms, select Responses → More options → Download responses (.csv).
  • Save the CSV file for records or import into Excel for reporting.

Where to Store Files in Microsoft 365

After conversion, store your files in:

  • OneDrive for personal files
  • SharePoint or Teams for shared or departmental files

This ensures proper collaboration, version control, and access management.

Common Issues and Tips

  • Formatting differences: Always review files after conversion.
  • Sharing settings: Google sharing permissions do not transfer so reassign access in Microsoft 365.
  • Version history: Downloading creates a new file; previous Google version history is not retained.
