Operational Standard/Purpose
All ICC employees are expected to devote their working hours to their primary job responsibilities at the College. Teaching, if not part of their primary job responsibilities, should be rare, but encouraged, if the need arises. Time away from an individual’s regular work assignment to teach should not disrupt or adversely affect their departmental and specific job responsibilities.
This standard establishes the parameters for teaching ICC courses by administrative, management, and classified staff during working hours.
Scope/Applicability
HLC-qualified staff members may teach ICC courses outside of their regular work responsibilities.
Procedures
- Responsibilities of Qualified Staff:
- Seek permission from Supervisor of her/his Department indicating interest to teach outside work responsibilities. If a Dean from an academic department makes the request under an emergency situation, the Supervisor must still be consulted for approval. Approval of arrangements for one semester does not guarantee ongoing approval of the same or similar arrangements.
- May teach no more than two (2) courses or six (6) credit hours per semester.
- Any regularly scheduled work hours missed due to time spent in the classroom teaching or providing support for students (office hours) must be made up or turned in as paid time off.
- Conference hours, class preparation, other ancillary activities, and online instructional activities should not be performed during regularly scheduled work hours. Any work hours missed must be made up or turned in as paid time off.
- Any exceptions to the above will require approval by the Vice President of Academic Affairs.
- Responsibilities of Supervisor:
- Review and approve direct report’s request to teach ICC courses outside of their regular work responsibilities, in consideration of the department’s priorities.
- Monitor work hours missed by a direct report due to their teaching assignment, and ensure work hours missed are made up outside their regularly scheduled hours or turned in as paid time off.
- Request a plan from the direct report for making up the hours missed for teaching outside regularly scheduled hours.
- Compensation:
- Exempt staff are entitled to receive the appropriate compensation as an adjunct faculty at rates established by the individual programs.
- Nonexempt staff will be paid an hourly rate for the adjunct assignment and will receive overtime pay for hours worked over 40 in a workweek, at a rate of time-and-one-half the regular rate of pay in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act.
